Who should organize occupational health care and why?

In Finland, the provision of occupational health care is a statutory obligation of the employer, which applies to all employees in an employment or civil service relationship, regardless of the duration of the employment relationship or the amount of working hours.

This obligation is based on the Occupational Health Care Act (1383/2001) and its aim is to prevent health risks arising from work and working conditions and to promote the working ability and well-being of employees.

So what does an occupational health agreement most commonly include?

Finla offers a purely statutory occupational health agreement only to companies with more than 50 employees. However, most often the occupational health agreement includes services other than what is required by law, such as medical care services.

Workplace Wellbeing Services – Tailored support for the well-being of the work community

Finla’s workplace wellbeing services offer proactive and tailored solutions that support work ability, prevent illness and strengthen the wellbeing of work communities. The range of services includes work ability coaching, work community development programmes, ergonomic assessments, nutrition and exercise guidance and services supporting mental wellbeing.

Our team of experts consists of occupational health doctors, nurses, psychologists and physiotherapists who plan measures to meet your company’s needs. The goal is to reduce sick leave, improve work performance and support the success of the organization. The services are available flexibly as part of an occupational health agreement or as separate packages.

Remote and digital services speed up access to care and create cost-efficiency

Remote and digital services are effective tools in occupational health care, such as video consultations, chat discussions and electronic health checks. They enable quick help regardless of time and place, reduce absences and save time. For the company, this means better productivity, cost-effectiveness and more flexible access to care for the employee – the employee receives help quickly, without unnecessary visits.

Services required by the Occupational Health Care Act

According to the law, occupational health services provider and the customer company must jointly conduct a workplace assessment and develop an action plan based on it. The law also requires that occupational health services provider supports and monitors employees’ work ability and prevent work-related illnesses.

Medical care services

An employer can add general practitioner-level, occupational health-focused medical care and other healthcare services to the statutory occupational health agreement for its employees.

In acute illness and accident cases, we do not necessarily refer the customer to their own responsible doctor or nurse, but rather, based on an assessment of the need for care, we refer them to the first available professional.

Medical specialist consultations

Specialist consultations can be part of an occupational health care agreement.

The task of occupational health care provider is to provide a comprehensive picture of the client’s care and support their ability to work as needed.

Laboratory tests

All Finla locations take laboratory samples by appointment.

See the station-specific sampling times here and book an appointment for sampling below.

Imaging and endoscopy examinations

Imaging examinations (X-rays, ultrasounds and magnetic resonance imaging) and endoscopy examinations are available with a referral from an occupational health physician, if the examinations are included in the company’s occupational health agreement.

Minor procedures

Minor procedures are often performed during a visit to the doctor’s office. For example, suturing/gluing a wound, opening and treating abscesses, removing a mole or skin lesion, removing a foreign object from the skin, rinsing the ear, or treating minor burns or wounds.

When is it better to go to the emergency room rather than to occupational health?

You should go to the emergency room in sudden and serious situations, such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, unconsciousness, symptoms of paralysis, or serious accidents. In life-threatening situations, always call 112.
